Mix or Belt?

Hey,

I have friends who asked me if they are singing correctly at their bridge and what is wrong way to sing.
Personally, I only understood what's right and wrong in theory. But this video really help clears up.
Rule of thumb:
Mix - Crescendo and Diminuendo can be done gradually at this coordination
Belt - Cannot. It's either FULL/LOUD or Falsetto.

Vocal Closure

Hey all,

Understanding and be able to control the vocal closure is perhaps one of the more fundamental stuffs to learn in singing. I suffered from poor vocal closure about 6-7 years ago and I took a long time to fix it (say a year plus?). But ultimately I swung the other extreme, and became really tight (too much that I'm straining). But yea, my coach is fixing my "pull-chest" problem right now.

For the rest without one, hopefully this video can enlighten a little:

And yes, you can play the bass guitar like a normal guitar! :D

"Hello everyone! This is an alternate version of the song we will be erased. As an experiment, all the chords, melodies are all played on a six string bass thru a combination of fretted notes and natural harmonics. I used a classical capo to fret the bottom 5 strings to get the right harmonics for the key of the song. the challenge was to let all of the harmonics ring clearly! some notes just couldn't sound out. i kick in a rat distortion in the chorus and surprisingly it sounds quite shoegazy! hopefully i'll be able to play on stage with just the drums and bass like this! i didn't bother to show the drums because they were programmed in midi. the rest that you see on screen are played live, so there are mistakes here and there! hopefully i get better at this technique with time!" -Pixel Apartment

Who says mix can't be powerful?

Hey Vocalists,

I've just started training with a SLS certified instructor. She helping me to work on my mix and connecting my 1st bridge. It's essential to sing in a mix beyond your bridge because pulling of the chest just distorts the sound, and probably dies at around G-G# (depending on vowel). But people always complain that mix voice is not powerful. Well, watch this video and tell me I'm wrong.
(And yea, seriously, DO NOT try this at home.)

I'm gonna work on my connectivity and then would love to work on this soon!

Hey all,

I grew up in church listening to Hillsong since 2002, and have always thought that "church music" is Hillsong and Hillsong = Church Music. And when I went searching for the authors of some of the songs such as "Did You Hear the Mountains Tremble?" and "I Could Sing of Your Love" which was done in their albums, I found out about "Delirious". They were the ones who wrote those two songs.

Ever since, I started listening to them coz' there's this whole different vibe about them in terms of worship lyrics and music, and that kinda broaden my perspective of church music a little. So be sure to check them out!

Minimalism works!

Hey all,

Here's an acoustic set by Jason Mraz, doing "I'm Yours" on Real Magic TV:

We have 2 musicians, and 4 instruments, and we have a very good set, despite the lack of a full contemporary band. Yes, an acoustic set can still pull off!

Why?

1. Lead Vocalist has very good technique, tone and feel to the sing, itself is a attention-capturing factor already. A good vocalist can pull off a good set even with an average band.

2. Back-up vocalist is able to add flavor, thickness and variation to pump up the dynamics of the song.

3. Instrumental techniques: apart from vocalising, they are pretty good with their instruments: acoustic guitar and percussion.

4. Good arrangement. A few instruments only you may think, but the arrangement has allow a progression of lows to high and back to low with a variety of pattern, combination and flow.

- Note how the percussion comes in

- Note the one part where the music dies down real low

- Note how Jason Mraz improvises his melody lines and lyrics

- Note Jason Mraz's scat singing (kinda like replacing the usual piano/keyboard/bass/belt-vocal solo?)

Believe it or not, there are always areas to be improved. The reason why we have the technology we enjoy today is because there are people who weren't satisfied. "We need a faster data transfer rate!" "We need to project colors unto the screen!" "We can't keep stopping just because we typed a wrong letter, there must be a better way!"

So now, we ask ourselves:

"Do I have the desire to improve as a musician?

Or am I satisfied with what I'm playing today?"

I'm sure all of us wants to be good and wants to play better in our music. But to be good requires changes - both in attitude and discipline. What are intervals?

Hey Students!

Most of you from the RCC WD (Worship Department) have attended the Music Fundamental I module and probably learned the basics of a major scale. Here's a clip talking about Music Intervals. What are intervals? Play the clip!

Let's use the C major scale as the scale to discuss on intervals:

C D E F G A B (C)

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8th

Intervals e.g.

Playing C then D is 2nd. (actually a minor 2nd, but let's not confuse ourselves at the moment)

Playing C to G is a... yes... a 5th.

What about C to the higher C (8th) ? It's an Octave!

It's actually that simple. Well, there are more details to it, but let's just leave it as it is for now.

Typical Vocal Session for Professional

Hey Vocalists,
AGAIN, we have Paramore's lead vocalist to show us the importance of warming up, training vocal coordination and working on the song. Let's take a look at how a professional go through a typical vocal lesson with Brett Manning.
Remember, these 3 things are the essentials we have learnt in the first lesson of Vocal I.

First portion of the clip: Hayley warming up, more of the pharyngeal workout,
then the mix resonance 'No' (which is basically warming up and vocal coord. training)
Finally, they work on the vocal coord of the song. (how to sing the notes in a better manner to prevent strains which produces not-so-nice tone)

Anyway, for anyone that needs basic coaching, I'm available to give you some aid. Yeah, may not be the best in town, but definitely know what I'm doing.

No shortcuts to good vocal tone!

Hi all,

Ever wonder how those people on TV and Radio can sing so comfortably at high notes, without any visible or audible strains? And so easily we label them as "talented" and tell ourselves "forget it, i'll never be able to sing like them...".
Well, you may be right in saying you're not talented in singing and you will never be able to sing like them. However, there's more to that.

Truths:
No.1: If you can pitch, and sing a melody relatively in tune and apart from that fact that you may not sing as well as Celine Dion or Jason Mraz or whoever you might be "idolizing", YOU CAN SING.

No.2: You're not talented, so what? You can train. A lot of average singers become good singers due to training. Good singers became experts as they continue to train. True, there are talenteds who can vocalize naturally and beautifully without training, but there are who can't! Especially if your main instrument is not your voice, you've probably not sang often and can't sing too well. But YOU, too, can sing naturally and aesthetically, with training.

No.3: You'll probably never gonna sound like those pop stars or rockers, but good news, you're going to sound like you! No, I'm not talking about the CURRENT YOU, but the POTENTIAL YOU. God gave us a unique body, though may be similar, our voice, facial and bone structure is unique to us - there's no other YOU! And, you have an AWESOME YOU to become, the YOU who sings at his/her best with his/her unique voice created at its max potential, and yes, with proper training and hard work - no shortcuts!

Well it's true that training may make you a superstar, but NO TRAINING = NO IMPROVEMENT.
If you can pitch, and enjoy singing, and wants to be better, why not take the red pill and explore deeper in vocalisation?

This evening we've completed the lecture faster than we've planned it to be. So what's left will be the Quiz paper. We'll update you on the actual date of the quiz paper, and hopefully *crossing fingers* that we won't do it on a Friday.

After some thoughts, I've decided to draft out a Tutorial (or to some known as Exercises) sheet for you guys to attempt. So you guys can know how much you know and come to me if there is any questions that you can't do. It'll be UP soon, I promise :)

James Kelly, HIGH MIX!

Hi Vocalists!

Ever wonder how singers go high notes comfortably?

The idea is to NEVER, EVER, belt.

Belt voice using FULL CHEST TONE up, forcing your voice with high notes at chest register.

When you reach a certain point, you start to cross the "bridge". The bridge and onwards it should be mixed with CHEST and HEAD resonance. Here's James Kelly showing how he gets his super balanced mix:

"...always start very low larynx...very light and very DOPEY...

to get a little more mix...then gets harder....add more volume

and texture as I go..."

Basic Drum Fills!

Hey Drum trainees!

Here's a short explanation in regards to drum fills.

"...I've always included listening as part of the regime...listen to what drummers do...borrow their ideas..."steal" their ideas...it'll change the way you play..."

Yeah, I can't agree more with the instructor. Listening is an integral part of playing music. How much you can play really depends on how much music you've been listening to. So make listening a lifestyle, and go practise! :)

Hey Students!

The first batch of "Music Fundamentals I" will be conducted @ Radiant Community Church on 16 OCT '09. Musicians / Media Crew / Worship Leaders will be required to complete this module so try to come in this Friday evening for the first batch of training!

Why "Music Fundamentals I" ?

1) Understand the basic aspects of music: Rhythm, Melody, Harmony and Color

2) Learn and apply basic terminologies: Key, Notes, Tempo, Chords, …

3) Understand the basic scales (minor & major) and chords (root, 1st inversion, etc)

After a long while of silence, finally the homemade Paper Aeroplane Ep is released. Its a free Ep, so feel free to share it with your friends!

I've included a little cover art for you ipod cover flow and what not as well as some liner notes, lyrics included.

An introduction to the new Ep:

As I walked down a street, I pondered over how time has shaped the landscape as we know it today. What was it like without the pavements and asphalt? It seems that even though buildings rise and fall, kingdoms come and go, and relationships start and end, the celestial objects seem to remain forever constant, almost a testimony of yesterday, today, and tomorrow. I wrote messages into an insignificant piece of paper, folded it up into the shape of an aeroplane, and threw it into the horizon. I watched as it faded away to nothingness against the backdrop of the sun.

Infinity feels innately overwhelming, a feeling mathematics does not seem to convey as well as gazing into the distance that never ends. Where would my paper aeroplane fly to? Is there an end to the journey?

This Ep is an expression of these thoughts. Hope you would enjoy it.

Good news!

Music Developmental Programme will be setting up THIS online page for students to obtain information such as:
- class schedules
- modules availability
- cores' track

Students will be able to access lesson materials and music-training resources!

For instructors, they'll be able to upload post their lesson articles online or write an inspirational post or two to provide nuggets of music knowledge in the main page.

While the site is being set up, students and instructors will already be able to have immediate access to available materials.
